In April 1998, Philadelphia's CoreStates Financial Corporation merged with First Union in the largest merger in US banking history at that time. Later, Wachovia was formed by the merger of First Union Corporation and the former Wachovia Corporation. In connection with the merger, First Union changed its name to Wachovia Corporation.
